Christine Meintjes Wedding Photography Workshop
"You dont make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music that you have heard and the people that you have loved"
WOW what an inspiring three days! Attending one of Christine's workshops has been on my list for so long.
So off I went on my trip not really knowing what to expect. Touching down in Cape Town brought back so many heartwarming memories and the Afrikaans song "Jantjie" was humming in my head. The song is sung by a girl and it is her love song to Jantjie (her boyfriend) saying the Cape is so empty without him. And that was how I felt, I missed my husband because we met and got married in Cape Town 14 years ago, that is our place our starting line of our lives together.
With my little white rental Polo Playa (very cute and clean but smelled of smoke!!!) and the tunes of KFM, I hit the N2 to Somerset West. Goodness did I get a surprise! You must realise in Hoedspruit (the little town where I live now) we dont even have a traffic light, everything is literally five minutes apart. And here I sat on the N2 consumed with this Tsunami of cars everybody slowly on their way somewhere. I just realised that getting worked up is not going to help so I just rolled down the window. At that moment it seemed like a better idea because the nauseating smell of the smoke and the possibility of a panic attack was lingering all around me!
For at least the next 15km I was entertained by people singing along with their radios, some fixing make up and others just staring into space.
Arriving at Christine's house I was welcomed by unfamiliar faces. You know that odd feeling if you are late and walking into a room eyes following every move you make. But soon after a thorough introduction, everybody started to relax and relate because at the end of the day we are all there because we are so passionate about photography.
The afternoon of the first day we did a Styled Shoot. I very quickly realised that I am not at all used to the Cape Winters anymore. You will see a few photos of the styled shoot and some behind the scenes as well!
Not even the terrible cold weather could hinder Christine's funny noises and bunny hops while getting so excited about the beautiful light and the gorgeous model! Christine that was absolutely PRICELESS!! Standing on the other side and see how we as photographers look like when we get excited made me giggle like a little girl! My dear assistant always insures the clients it is a good sign when I start making funny noises!!!
Besides the amazing food that was presented to us during the three days and the connections that was formed I learned so much! Not about technical stuff as such but about myself and my journey as a photographer. For the first time in seven years I stood back and reflected on my journey. I took stock of where I have started, the ups and downs the evolution of my brand all the way to where I am now and where I am heading. I felt like Moses standing in front of the Red Sea, for so long I was wondering how and when and where and on that epic moment everything became clear to me! The Sea just opened up!
Christine basically just presented us with keys and we had to find the doors that needed to be unlocked! I am a firm believer that everything in my life happens for a reason, whether it is good or bad. I also believe that I need to look for signs along the way that will direct me on my journey, and to form steady and honest relationships, it is after all the most spiritual human experience. I believe in Destiny.
Elisabeth Gilbert sums it up so beautifully!! She said the following
Creativity itself doesn't care at all about results- the only thing it craves is the process. Learn to love the process and let whatever happens next happen, without fussing to much about it. Work like a monk, or a mule, or some other representative metaphor for diligence. Love the work. Destiny will do what it wants with you, regardless.
To everybody who attended the workshop, I was honourd that our paths crossed - you inspired me on all different levels.
Nicola, you are a machine! Thank so much for all the extra that nobody expected from you! You are an AMAZING human being.
Christine, all I can say is thank you, thank you for sharing your life story, thank you for opening up your house and giving so much of yourself even though you felt so sick! and thank you for the keys!
To my family friends and followers who started and supported this journey, thank you so much!!! My amazing husband and gorgeous kids, I know it takes a lot from you, me being on the road working late, I appreciate your understanding and love. I would never be able to be who I am without you!!!! Love you to the moon and back!!!
